Coming Up With a Strategy (6 hours)

  • Set up a meeting with a business owner and ask him/her what he/she would want from a website. Also ask him/her what the business strategy is and how the website would fit into it.
  • Then write a detailed document about this.
  • I would like you to use the information from this document and create a website architecture.
  • Now let’s focus on the web design strategy. Your document should justify all the major decisions you make – from the domain registration, hosting, design and target audience through to what you decide in terms of programming.

PMC Offshore is a middle eastern based company that provides professional services & product supply within the construction industry. The requirement is a website that would present them in a professional matter. The goal for the website is for them to be more easily reached as well as promoting their services. The goal is going to be reached by creating a strategic website map that meets the customers requirements with industry standard content that is up to date. The design style to be followed is their existing brand manual. WordPress will be used to develope the websit.

Creating a Brief (6 hours)

I want you to take on a client. I then need you to have a meeting with your client and create a very detailed brief. This brief should contain all the information that will be needed to achieve the client’s requirements.Your brief should cover these sections:

  • What is the client’s service/product?
  • What are their requirements?
  • What is the website’s goal?
  • How are you going to achieve this goal?
  • Build the website architecture (so we can see what sections will be needed)
  • What is the design style that will be required?
  • What are your suggestions for marketing the site?

The brief should be good enough to hand over to any design/programming team and get a great result.

Applying Philosophy to Design 2 (1,5 days)

The study of theory on a subject is important, but for a designer the study should not end with the analysis and discussion thereof. It only really becomes useful when we can use it successfully in our work and daily lives. What does the theory teach you and how can you apply this?

In the previous lesson we touched on creating thumbnails, when watching this lesson’s video, pay careful attention to the section on preliminary or rough sketching out of ideas.Design a book cover for a thriller book called “The Fall of Imagination” by Sam Wan. This book does not exist and is open to your interpretation as to the subject matter.

  • It must be designed by clearly drawing inspiration from a previous design style.
  • The size of the cover must be A5 and it should include a front, spine and back.
  • The cover must contain a simple vector illustration that forms the basis of the design.
  • The cover must contain the title and the name of the author.

Analysing the Use of Design Fundamentals (2 hours)

Question 1 & 2

The successful fundamentals of this image when I analyse it, it is how the poster is made by “halftones”.

When you look really up close at the image, you will only see halftone dots, but from a distance you will see the image appear, the further away you look at it. The halftone dots are done successfully with a “rainbow” gradient. You are driven from the bottom of the image and towards the face, so the color use is done successfully. The image almost looks modern, since the halftone dots looks like giant pixels.

It is a successful use of the fundamentals of the Gestalt Theory, where the designer has used Proximity in his design. The halftone dots in the image is arranged closely together, this creates groups of association between the dots.

I don’t think this image is a pastiche, since the image is not copying the style of the original poster. It is neither a parody of the original image, rather a celebration. I think this image is more an “Allusion”, this is when a designer refers to another one’s work.

The first he uses is “Empathy“, his first step in his project is identifying his target audience, and for this poster I think it is difficult to say, but the poster is an artistic/political poster with his touch of design. The second thing he uses is; “Distill its message“, this is about what you want to communicate. Maybe by making this image, he did it to renew interest in the history of Che Guevara. Third on his list is “Explore“, by that he says that “we often get trapped in our own common references that works”. Number on his list is to “Create a relationship“, by this he says in the article that the “brain is looking for patterns constantly”. on his list is to even “Explore some more“, and number 6 is “Be consistent“.   The last point on his list is “Add Value“, he says in the article “Add an element of surprise, it is the unexpected that makes something stand apart and that makes someone remember it”.

Question 3

When I read about what Mondrian said about beauty, I see very clear similarities of the design of Tahier Variawa’s image and what have played a dominant role.

Mondrian says “throughout the history of culture, art has demonstrated that universal beauty does not arise from the particular character of the form, but from the dynamic rhythm of its inherent relationships, or – in a composition – from the mutual relations of forms. Art has shown that it is a question of determining the relations.”

Question 4, 5 and 6

If I had to create this illustration, and without doing any execution, but by just looking at the original design I would have done this;

When it comes to colour, I would split between three options, in one example, I think I would have used even more colours, to make the image look more realistic, with more natural tones. I

Question 7

Composition;
Maybe I would have liked to have more “air” in the picture, but actually I really like how the composition of this image is.  When you are “closer” to your image, in this design Che Guevara covers almost the whole image, you then feel that you get closer to the object in the image.

Applying Philosophy to Design 1 – Practical Assignment (1,5 days)

Of the many tools a designer has to his disposal, the tools of visual styles and the effective application thereof is paramount – whether a designer crafts by hand or computer, the physical tools merely aid him in executing his ideas. In other words, concept and style are more important than the physical tools that are used. What we imply by this is not that the execution can be slack when the concept is strong, but that the style and execution should express the concept at its best. Consider the visual overview we have taken on the use of strong and bold graphic design, and how this is used to communicate a message with a conscience.

In addition to the further exploration of applying styles to messages properly, we will also take a brief look at sketching and thumbnail techniques.

Focusing on Design With A Conscience – Theoretical Assignment (3 hrs)

This is a poster that is from modernism and is a good example of a propaganda poster.

The typography is bold and clearly visible, which is typical of the modernist style. The font should be bold and the typography is also simple. The colors are the same as they are solid color and do not cast shadows on the style.

Only three colors have been used here, which gives a prestigious feel. Blue, red and white. The blue is formal while the red is a statement and can often be associated with self-confidence depending on the context in which it is used, but in this context this color does. The white that shines through is a good color choice to promote the message of hope. Then white is often associated with hope in our culture and American. The use of this style works for the purpose it has because it is almost expected that propaganda posters will have this style to go a long way. Poster effectively conveys the use of colors and the simple modernist style.

Focusing on Pioneering Designers

What is your opinion on  the use of the computer combined with different media? :

Using computers and technology in combination with more traditional media is in my opinion crucial.Ensuring that you have both the skills in the use of new tech as well as the use of traditional means to convey a message speaks volumes about how good you really are as an artist, be it an illustrator, designer or photographer.

The cool thing about being an artist is that you can specialize in what you like working with the most. As time passes you get ideas and try to experiment with different medias and technologies, Some find the one thing they love and specialize in it. Other artists work in allot of different medias because they simply need the variety.

The tools you use can be varied and using technology in creating is something i think most artists would benefit from. However in the end what software and tech or materials you use does not matter, unless you develop you general skills and especially your eye for the arts. Software and tools can only be used well if you spend time developing your eye while you create.

The relationship between image and text :

In this section of the post i will explain the connection between image and text in neo-modernism and how it relates back to the Swiss design style.

The use of grids with typography is ever present in design, especially when it comes to poster design and front pages, even on flyers. A good poster design is well composed, this often is up to the eye of the designers but the best designs are created while using a grid to align everything in some way.

Even in Swiss designs where the headlines and text create interest while being asymmetrical in their respective layouts rely on the use of grids to look good and reach a professional standard. As an artist you have the creative freedom to play with typography and illustrate the typography itself and around it.

There are rules in place for creating good typography with a heavy emphasis on legibility, as a creative however there is nothing stopping you from creating interesting visuals with typography and layouts.

This may not be theoretically correct always, however if the composition is solid and it looks good it can be considered good or even great design. In other words, different can be good as long as it is done well. We all need to understand that being different just to be different, seldom vibes well with the designs or in the eyes of the beholders.

Research on Late Modernism (1 day)

Research on the Swiss International Style

The Swiss style is strong, the style is clean, and focuses on readability and the use of grids and photography. The Swiss style is often called or referred to as the international typographic style. The typeface used in this style was the Sans Serif typography, and the usage of asymmetrical layouts in the design. The style consists of strong graphic elements like geometry, patterns, strong colors, often colors that looked strange together, and abstract elements. The style used the grid system as a framework, on how they ordered the words and layouts together. This framework has after since been very important in web designing today. The design is flat, there is no shadows, decorative borders, no 3D, the content is in focus, there is no gradients, and this was important in the Swiss design style. Posters and layouts in this style focuses on typography, with the usage of Sans Serif. Big and bold letters, strongly positioned in the grid system, with asymmetrical looks in the background with the usage of photography, and strong colors, and flush left, ragged right text. Many people think of the Swiss design style when they think of the Helvetica typeface. This typeface was earlier on named ‘Neue Haas Grotesk’.  Helvetica means Swiss in Latin.  Swiss design style was developed in the 1950’s and focused on the readability, objectivity, and cleanliness. Some of the characteristic of the style, was also the usage of whitespace, this was a visual element on impact and readability.

Influences on Swiss International Style

One of the main influencers on Swiss international style, was Joseph Müller-Brockmann. Joseph was influenced by the ideas of different design styles and art movements; De Stijl, Constructivism, Suprematism and the Bauhaus. He is the most remembered person from this period as a Swiss Design Style designer. Many people remember his name when you talk about the period of Swiss Design Style. Some of the early influences of this style was Jan Tschiold’s Die neue Typographie (1928), Ernst Keller (1891- 1968), he is known as the father of Swiss Design Graphics. He began teaching at Kunstgewerbechule – School of arts and crafts in Zürich, Switzerland. He started experimenting on content and the usage of the grid-systems. Many of his students were inspired by the international Style movement, like Joseph Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hoffmann and Emil Ruder.

Joseph Müller-Brockmann was born in Rapperswil in Switzerland in 1914. He studied design, history and architecture at the university of Zurich at the city’s Kunstgewerbeschule.  In 1936 he opend his own studio I Zürich, specialising in graphics, photography and exhibition design. He wanted to make design that communicated to the masses, across languages. The belief was to enlighten, inform, without being manipulative, and this is what led to Joseph’s turning point. Joseph was once influenced by Carl Jung, but then he lost the interest. When he was a young man he was interested in phycology and graphology, and when he met people, he would read and judge their handwriting, but he abandoned this overnight, because it disturbed him when dealing with clients, that this was an unnecessarily prejudice discussion. What he tried to achieve is to communicate information, as clearly as possible.

Armin Hoffman is also a well-known personality and is described to be outstanding in the Swiss graphic design history. Hoffmann was born in 1920, and he began teaching at the Basel School of Arts and Crafts after he met Emil Ruder on a train trip, and he found out that the school was looking for a new teacher. He was a teacher there for 40 years, and when Emil Ruder left the school, Armin took over his place as the head of the school. Hoffman and Ruder’s focus was to make design that focused on communication above anything else. Hoffmann felt that making posters was the best way to communicate, and most efficient way. And much of his career he spent designing posters, mostly for Basel Stadt Theatre. He’s philosophy was that a good poster would exist in the streets, not as museums pieces, and be subjects of the effect of weather and time. His philosophy and his style of what he created, was that they put communication above everything else, and practiced new techniques of photo-montage, photo-typesetting, with experimental compositions, and he favored sans-serif typography.

Analysis of the Swiss International Style

The simularities between The Zurich School of Arts and Kraft led by Joseph Müller-Brockmann and The Basel School of Design led by Armin Hoffmann is many. Armin Hoffmann and Joseph Müller-Brockmann both had studied with the great Ernst Keller in Zurich before world war II. The style of them both was that design should be as invisible as possible. They both wanted the message to be in focus, to shine through, it was important that all the traces of the designer’s subjectivity should be suppressed.

Joseph Müller-Brockmann in his designs and teaching, subjectivity is suppressed in favor of geometric grid that determines the arrangement of the type and images. He used the grid-system to make the message easier to read in his designs. The grid-system is and organizational system that enables you to achieve an orderly result with a minimum cost. That the task would be solved faster, better and more easily.

While Armin Hoffman in Basil would be exploring a similar but still different distinctive approach. He put greater weight in the use of typography and striking tonal contrasts in his designs and teaching.  Both of the schools used the grid-system, and focused on sans-serif typeface, and layouts that where asymmetrical. The school wanted the message to be in focus so that it could reach the masses.

Creating an Animation in After Effects (8 hours)

  • Work through my sunrise example step-by-step. Upload your version of this project to your WordPress blog. Please note, you will make a better impression if you make this animation your own. Don’t be scared to take things a little further and experiment.
  • Now you need to come up with a unique animation concept of your own. Create a storyboard for this concept. (Make sure that your idea is not too complicated, but don’t limit yourself by making it overly simple.) Scan your sketches in and upload it to your WordPress blog.
  • The next step is to create the file and folder structure. Please take a screenshot of your folder structure and hand it in along with your project.
  • Create your animation in After Effects. Upload your project file and your rendered animation to your WordPress blog.

I am not able to upload the rendered file as wordpress do not allow it unless i upgrade my plan.

This is however a screenshot of the work.
